Aims: This study intends to investigate the effect of resistance exercise during fasting and after breakfast on appetite and energy intake in young women.
Methods: Ten young non-athlete women in the age group of 20 to 35 years and body mass index of 20 to 25 performed resistance exercise (70% 1RM) on two different days, one week apart, fasting or after eating breakfast. Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) were used 6 times for appetite assessment and the ad libitum food intake was measured before and after of exercise and the two days after. Blood sugar (BS) was also measured twice before and after exercise. Paired t-test was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that BS before exercise in the fasting state was significantly lower than in the non-fasting state (p = 0.004) but this difference was not significant after exercise. Appetite before lunch in the fasting state was significantly higher than in the non-fasting state (p = 0.005). However, the calories consumed in lunch were significantly lower in the fasting state compared to the non-fasting state (p = 0.049). While the total energy intake of 24 hours per training day was significantly higher in the non-fasting group (p = 0.002), There was no significant difference in energy intake 24 and 48 hours after exercise, (p ≥ 0.05).
Conclusion: It seems that consuming breakfast before resistance exercise increases the energy intake in the post-exercise meal without effect on the next days.
